Afrenasia AKA Grant Cook, in the Bonus Stage Technologies Exhibition presents a selection of works across a variety of disciplines, encompassing photography, graphic design, comic book art and traditional pen on paper drawing.
Grant is inspired by the design aesthetic of Hello Kitty and the subversive ethos of the Designers Republic. He draws on the superbright world of comic books and their vibrant superheroes, as well as the dark worlds of surrealist H.R.Giger. He fuses these influences to create intricate worlds. Some he populates with strange and beautiful creatures, others are stark and abstract. Each picture has a story to tell, whether of a bright comicbook world fighting against an evil that oppresses it, or the life and breeding patterns of a 2 dimensional universe to the hidden beauty of a city in its forgotten and neglected spaces.
The title 'Bonus Stage Technologies’ captures the sense of excitement and illuminating discovery encountered when a bonus stage area is unlocked in a video game. The pieces in the exhibition are like these bonus stages, each a secret part of a hidden world.
The exhibition will take place at Per Square Metre Gallery - 191 - 193 Johnston Street, Collingwood - 8th to 22nd of September. The Launch party will be held at the gallery on the Friday 11th of September - 6-9pm.
